Olive’s Bend, Oregon Home Birth Story
Olive was born at home to parents Rebekah and Simon on a beautiful afternoon in Bend, Oregon. She came into the world surrounded by calm and quiet. This was the very first birth I ever shot. Looking back, it’s absolutely one of the best photographic opportunities I’ve ever had in 8 years as a photographer. Babies are almost always born in the middle of the night and the florescent lighting at the hospital never did a camera any favors.
Not only that, but there was something so ordinary about this birth. In some ways, it felt like any other day in the house for this family. There was no bluster, anxiety or stress, just quiet calm progress until Olive decided to make her debut. Her big brother and grandparents played quietly with trucks and legos in the next room, midwives came and went from the room helping with dishes in the kitchen one minute, then checking baby’s heart rate the next. This birth had a profound impact on the career I’ve strived to create. Use the light, show the full story, watch for the love in every moment.
This birth was attended and supported by the midwives at Bend Birth Center. I can’t recommend these women enough for those who would like to have their baby at a birthing center or at home.
